"They
(organizers) will Forge (daw) a New Filipino American Agenda for the 21st Century"?
Seattle
,
WA
- In just a few weeks, hundreds of community leaders, members and advocates
throughout the
United States
and other countries will gather in
Seattle
to discuss how to "Forge a New Filipino American Agenda for the 21st
Century" and promote the welfare and well-being of Filipinos and
Filipino-Americans by fostering unity and empowerment.
The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), will hold
its 8th National Empowerment Conference, a three-day event on
September 26-28, 2008
at the Westin Hotel in downtown
Seattle
. Since its founding in 1997, leaders from across the nation and around
the world convene every two years to discuss how Filipinos can help each other
improve their quality of life. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will
be the keynote during the Gala event on
Friday, September 26, 2008
. Over 1,000 attendees are expected.
"We are really looking forward to hearing what President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo has to say to us. We are a diverse community, some of us are third,
fourth generation Filipino Americans, but regardless of how far back we can
trace our Filipino ancestry, we remain attached to the culture. We would also
like her to hear how we are very much part of day to day struggle to have the
quality of life we hope for, as Filipino Americans. NaFFAA is a young
national organization, only 11 years old, yet has had major successful projects
such as dual citizenship for global Filipinos. But we are still and
will continue to fight in the
United States
for Equity for Filipino WWII Veterans, for voter education, civil rights
advocacy, better educational and business opportunities. It is good for
President Arroyo to hear all that." states Kern. Other expected dignitaries
visiting with the President are: Secretary, Department of Trade and Industry
Peter Favila, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto Romulo and Press
Secretary, Jesus Dureza. "The youth sector will have our own workshop
offerings that specifically focus on issues such as leadership development,
identity and culture, and how we can be part of the 21st Century dynamic and
strong Filipino bloc now, not 10 years from now", asserts Ian Purganan,
Region 7 Youth Chair. He adds, " field trip is planned to visit
various Filipino-American and Asian-American sites of historical significance
such as the Carlos Bulosan Exhibit,
Rizal
Park
and
RIzal
Bridge
." "We planned the workshops so that there is something for everyone.
General Aglipay of the Philippine Retirement Authority will discuss how you can
enjoy your retirement pension in style. We have workshops from Alternative
Medicine to Education, Domestic Violence Prevention and Human Trafficking and so
much more. This conference is rich with intellectual stimulation and
networking with esteemed leaders. You can be up close and personal with
activists and trailblazers like Dolores Sibonga, Bob Santos and Dorothy Cordova,
Pio De Cano", reiterates Mariela Fletcher, Overall Conference Chair. NaFFAA
Conference would not be complete without an educational forum on political
empowerment. Discussion of platforms will be led by both spokespersons
from Republican and Democrat Campaign, respectively. "As a national
Filipino American organization, it is important for our community to know what
each presidential candidate have to say about the issues affecting us. We
need to vote intelligently", said Kern. NaFFAA invites not only Filipinos
and Filipino Americans but everyone interested in enriching their knowledge of
who and what Filipinos are about. NaFFAA's purpose is to monitor legislation and
public policy issues affecting Filipino Americans and work in coalition with
other national groups around common issues and concerns. It is headquartered in
Washington
,
D.C.
and recognized by policy-makers, private industry and national advocacy groups
as the voice of Filipinos and Filipino Americans throughout the nation. It is a
non-partisan, non-profit national affiliation of more than five hundred
Filipino-American institutions and umbrella organizations. Its twelve regions
cover the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii,
Guam, and the
Marianas
. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at the St. Edwards Parish on Saturday Sept
28, at
10:00 AM
. President Arroyo will address the Filipino American community
afterwards. The Filipino Community of Seattle, a member organization is
co- sponsoring this event for NaFFAA. The Filipino Chamber of Commerce in the
Pacific Northwest
offers workshops designed to help new and existing businesses to make their
millions. Topics such as Access to Capital, IT Infrastructure for Small
Business and Supplier Diversity are among the many topics being offered. The registration fee is $195, which includes all workshops, materials, meals,
and a gala dinner; and $125. For business tract. To attend the conference, be an

Why
the
Philippines
Is Shunned By Foreign
Investors
For
so many years each one of us must be searching for answers on why despite the
intelligence and educational background we thought we have, foreign investments
doesn’t seem to stick in the country. The simple answer I was told is
"the system" which we inherited during the 360 years of being lorded
by the Spaniards before we got turned to over to the Americans, actually sold
together with Puerto Rico under the Treaty of Paris. Everyone must have heard of
so many stories about how foreign investors get scammed after all their monies
are brought into the country. The latest of which was the construction of the
new
Manila
international airport by an
international consortium of investors and developers, headed by a German
company. Soon after it was built, the president or chief operating officer
almost got arrested on charges of corruption. The good thing is that poor guy
was not in the country at the time the warrant of arrest was issued by a court
in
Manila
. Anyhow, the government took
over the facility without paying the consortium, that went to court to order the
government of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to pay up... but you know what happened?
They didn’t pay. The judge that found the government in fault was gunned down
a month after the decision. He was shot dead, and no one knew who did the job.
That's only the latest example of the hundreds of stories that really
happened to foreign investments. Remember that Canadian mining company based in
British Columbia
that sunk in $275 million?
After the balance of the total investment was brought in… the Canadian mining
executive and his assistant were arrested, and do you know what they are accused
of? Pollution!!! For goodness sake,
that mining company had been operating there for more than 30 years, and the
Philippine government only found that out after the money was brought in? If
they ask them (anyone) what happened, they’d tell you that "well, anyway
those investors deserved the treatment". What about that famous story on
Imelda Marcos cashing in $200 million out of paper investment she signed with
the operators of that foreign investment company who didn’t say anything but
gave the cash to Imelda? See, this family of Ferdinand is best example on how
business and political people are behaving worse than the wise guys from
New York
. Before I continue, the
Marcos family are all back home and doing very well. The money they stole is
still with them and two of them were elected as government officials. Imagine
that! Only in the
Philippines
. Back between the 80s and
90s I was told by one of the managers of a Geneva based inspection company (SGS)
that Filipinos are basically corrupt and won't invest their own money for any
business whatsoever... even operating a (sari-sari) grocery store. According to
stats… 86% fails. In
1986, a businessman who was managing the Hong Kong branch of Equitable Bank of
the Philippines, the youngest brother of the Go family named Frank, who doubles
as a trader asked me to sell goods
for him… since he’s from Manila, I sold and booked a quarter million U.S.
dollar worth of woven fabric from China, but the problem was there was no goods
from China, so my buyer notified him that he will sue him for damages… he
thought since I am Filipino, I’d be one of those whom they enslaves back home
and won’t hurt me at all. The son-of-a-bitch paid my buyer and didn’t even
say sorry to me. Up to this time he hasn’t paid for the work I did which is
about $7,500. That’s peanuts for this millionaire who makes at the least
$10,000 a day. So there you go…Again, it’s in the system that’s been
hanging there for more than 100 years…. Reliability is not in our dictionary.
In my next article I will be mentioning more on why we are way back behind
countries surrounding us (in) manufacturing goods for export. And of course my
meetings with famous people back home who are all corrupted and vicious... You
will be surprised how unreliable we became after all those years from the time
be got our independence from Uncle Sam on
July 4th, 1946
… Please stay tuned for our
forthcoming articles and stories that will make your blood boil. Did you know
that the Cory Aquino government loaned the Lopezes billions of pesos with no
guarantee? And what about that former speaker Jose De Venesia, who also stole
billions from the government of Ferdinand Marcos, and never paid back? All these
infos are documented and archives at the Library of Congress, submitted by
Philippine newspapers, such as the old Manila Times. We have more stories to
come as we go along publishing the first of it kind newsmagazine which only
purpose is for us to open our eyes and see what we can do together and talk
about on how we can be great again as we used to be before the Europeans came
along and bastardized our people and turned us to garbage of the Pacific. But,
first let’s find out how we all got here, so ethnically divided and ignorant
of what Jose Rizal, was trying to tell us.
Imelda,
Imelda will be posted later..... we received a lot of e-mails regarding this
article from so many readers all over the world... relax! we will publish
this without any cuts...everything will be there from the time she was crowned
Miss Manila, by the city mayor who later got killed later after she married the
swindler and killer and all of the above description of a bad man, Ferdinand E.
Marcos.
Some
of the articles coming soon for publication: "Imelda, Imelda"
"The daughter of the late Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson, grew up to become a
very successful politician and business leader" "Rita, the
Canadian Model that was gang raped in Manila by policemen" "No
Government Officials Can Prove They are not Crooks" "Why North
Borneo Was Never Secured Territory of the Philippines" " What
Ernie Maceda did in Washington, D.C. having escaped the rape case filed by a
secretary brought in from Manila" And, there are so many stories very
interesting for Filipinos to read.....Please stay tuned...for there are lots of
articles and stories coming from our very talented Filipino independent writers
whom we are to celebrating, especially stories that cannot be published in
Philippines for fear of imprisonment for libel.
